Meisner v Detroit, Belle Isle & Windsor Ferry Company (1908)

Samuel Meisner sues the ferry company for refusing to accept him as a passenger because he was black. The Michigan Supreme Court ruled in favor of the ferry company on the grounds that as a private company, it had a right to “keep out those whom, for reasons of its own, it deemed objectionable. Unless it did this, it would not secure the class of patrons it desired.”
