This case brought into quest whether a provision in the Michigan State Constitution to prohibit race and sex based discrimination, an affirmative action provision used in public university admissions procedures, was unconstitutional. Final decision made in the US Supreme court, decided that the protections for race and sex-based discrimination banned in Michigan with the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, does not violate the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment and that the Supreme Court cannot overrule the will of the Michigan voters who enacted this law.
